The Passion of Jesus, chronologically compiled from all four gospels

D
It reads like a novel, but the life of Jesus, his crucifixion and resurrection is now considered a safe occurrence, which is also reported by historians of that time beyond the Bible. For example, the Roman historian Flavius Josephus (37 – 100 AD in: Jewish antiquities) reports:

“At that time there was a Jesus, a wise person, if you can call him a person at all. In fact, he was the accomplice of very incredible deeds and the teacher of all people who joyfully accepted the truth. So he attracted many Jews and also many pagans. He was the Christ. And although Pilate sentenced him to death on the cross at the instigation of the noblest of the people, his former followers were not unfaithful to him. Because on the third day he appeared to them alive again, as God-sent prophets had previously announced this and a thousand other wonderful things about him. And the people of the Christians who call themselves after him continue to this day. „

What happened?

Among the enthusiastic cheers of the residents of Jerusalem and the festival visitors, Jesus had come to the capital of Israel on a donkey for the Passover, as the prophets (like Daniel) had announced centuries before. He had thrown the money changers and traders out of the temple, which made the hatred of the Jewish upper class immeasurable. Then he explained to his disciples what would happen now and in the distant time in the last days of this world.

Now read on:

The betrayal of Judas

But it was close to the Feast of Unleavened Bread called Passa. And the chief priests and scribes sought how they could kill him; because they were afraid of the people. But Satan drove in Judas, called Iscariot, who belonged to the number of twelve. And he went and talked to the chief priests and the captains about how he could betray him to them, and said: What do you want to give me? I want to tell him to you. And they offered him thirty pieces of silver. And he said so and looked for an opportunity to give him up to her without a fuss.

The sacrament

But on the first day of the Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked: Where do you want us to prepare the Passover Lamb for you to eat? And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and you will meet a man who carries a jug of water; Follow him and wherever he goes, speak to the master: The master will tell you: Where is the room where I can eat the Passover lamb with my disciples? And he will show you a large hall that is upholstered and prepared; prepare for us there.
And the disciples went and came into the city and, as he had told them, found it and prepared the Passover lamb. And in the evening when the hour came, he sat down and the apostles with him. When they ate, Jesus took the bread, thanked and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, Take, eat; that is my body. And he took the cup and gave thanks, gave it to them, and said, Drink all of it; this is my blood of the covenant, 1 which is shed for many to forgive sins. I say to you: from now on I will no longer drink from this vine plant until the day when I will drink it again with you in my father’s kingdom. When Jesus said this, he became sad in the spirit and testified and said, Verily, verily, I say to you: One of you will betray me. Then the disciples looked at each other, and they were afraid of whom he was talking about. But one of his disciples whom Jesus loved was at the table at the breast of Jesus. Simon waved to Peter to ask who it was that he was talking about. Then he leaned against the chest of Jesus and asked him: Lord, who is it?
Jesus answered: It is to whom I immerse the bite and give it. And he took the bite, immersed it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. And when he took the bite, Satan drove into it. Then Jesus said to him, What you do, do it soon! But nobody at the table knew what he was telling him. Some said that because Judas had the bag, Jesus said to him: Buy what we need for the feast !, or that he should give something to the poor. When he had taken the bite, he went out immediately. And it was night.

The glorification and the new commandment

When Judas had gone out, Jesus said: Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify him in himself and will glorify him soon. Dear children, I’ll be with you for a little while longer. You will look for me. And as I said to the Jews, I now also say to you: Wherever I go, you cannot get there. I give you a new command that you love each other as I loved you so that you also love each other. This will tell everyone that you are my disciples if you love each other.

The high priestly prayer

So Jesus spoke and lifted up his eyes to heaven and said: Father, the hour has come: glorify your son so that the son can glorify you; for you have given him power over all men, so that he may give eternal life to all you have given him. But this is eternal life that they will recognize you, who you are the only true God and whom you have sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth and completed the work that you gave me to do. And now, father, you glorify me with yourself with the glory that I had with you before the world was.
I have revealed your name to the people you have given me from the world. They were yours and you gave them to me and they kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave me comes from you. Because I gave them the words you gave me, and they accepted them and truly recognized that I emanated from you, and they believe that you sent me.
I pray for them and not for the world, but for those you have given me; because they are yours. And everything that is mine is yours, and what is yours is mine; and I am glorified in them. I am no longer in the world; but they are in the world and I come to you. Holy Father, receive them in your name that you have given me that they are one like us.
As long as I was with them, I received them in the name you gave me, and I kept them, and none of them are lost except the son of doom, so that the scriptures may be fulfilled. But now I come to you and speak this in the world so that my joy in them is complete. I gave them your word and the world hated them; because they are not of the world as I am not of the world. I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from evil. You are not of the world as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in truth; your word is the truth.
As you sent me into the world, I send it into the world. I sanctify myself for them so that they too can be sanctified in truth. I am not only praying for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word so that they are all one. Just as you, father, are in me and I in you, so they should be in us, so that the world can believe that you have sent me. And I gave them the glory that you gave me to be one, as we are, me in them and you in me, so that they were one and recognize the world that you sent me and loved them how you love me.
Father, I want where I am to be with me who you gave me so that they can see my glory that you gave me; for you loved me before the foundation of the world was laid Just father, the world doesn’t know you; but I know you and they have recognized that you sent me. And I have made your name known to them and I will make it known so that the love with which you love me is in them and I in them.
And when they had sung the song of praise, they went out to the Mount of Olives

Talks with the disciples

The announcement of Peter’s denial

There was also a dispute among them about who should be considered the greatest. And he said to them, The kings rule over their people, and their rulers can be called benefactors. But not yours! But the greatest among you should be like the youngest and the noblest like a servant. Because who is bigger: who sits at the table or who serves? Isn’t it the one sitting at the table? But I am like a servant among you. But it is you who have endured with me in my challenges. And I want to give you the kingdom, as my father has given me, that you should eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to sift you like wheat. But I asked for you that your faith should not stop. And if one day you will be converted, strengthen your brothers.
That night you’ll take all the nuisance out of me. For it is written (Zechariah 13: 7): „I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will scatter.“ But when I have risen, I will go to Galilee before you. Peter answered and said to him, „Even if they take away all the nuisance, I will never take nuisance from you.“
Jesus said to him, Truly, I say to you, that night before the rooster crows you will deny me three times. For I say to you: What is written must be accomplished in me (Isaiah 53:12): „He has been counted among the evildoers.“ For what is written by me will be accomplished.
Peter said to him, And if I should die with you, I will not deny you. All the disciples said the same thing.

Jesus in Gethsemane

When Jesus had said this, he went out with his disciples over the Kidron stream; there was a garden in which Jesus and his disciples went. But Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. And Jesus said to his disciples, Sit here until I pray.
And he took Peter and James and John with him, and began to tremble and hesitate, and said to them, My soul is sad until death; stay here and watch!
And he went a little further, threw himself on the ground and prayed that the hour would pass him if possible, and said: Abba, my father, everything is possible for you; take this cup from me; not what I want, but what you want!
But an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
And he wrestled with death and prayed more violently. And his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the earth. And he came and found her sleeping and said to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you watch „an“ hour? Watch and pray that you will not be tempted! The mind is willing; but the meat is weak.
And he went back and prayed and said the same words, and came back and found them sleeping again; for their eyes were full of sleep and they did not know what to say to him.
And he came for the third time and said to them: Oh, do you want to go on sleeping and resting? It’s enough; the hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Get up, let’s go! See, he is there who betrays me.

Jesus‘ capture

When Judas had brought the troops of soldiers with him and servants from the chief priests and Pharisees, he came there with torches, lamps and weapons.
Now that Jesus knew everything that was to come to him, he went out and said to them: Who are you looking for?
They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. He says to them: It’s me!
And the traitor had given them a sign and said: Which one I will kiss is it; seizes and leads him away safely. And when he came, he immediately came up to him and said: Rabbi !, and kissed him. But they laid hands on him and seized him.
When Jesus said to them: It’s me! They backed away and fell to the ground.
Then he asked her again: Who are you looking for? But they said: Jesus of Nazareth.
Jesus replied: I have told you that it is I. If you are looking for me, let them go!
This was to fulfill the word he said: I haven’t lost any of those you gave me.
But when those around him saw what was going to happen, they said: Lord, shall we strike with the sword? Simon Peter, however, had a sword and drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. And the servant’s name was Malchus.
Then Jesus said: Let go! Not further! And he touched his ear and healed him.
Then Jesus said to Peter: Put your sword in its place! For whoever takes the sword shall perish by the sword. Or do you think I couldn’t ask my father to send me more than twelve legions of angels at once? How would the scripture then be fulfilled that it must be so?
At that hour Jesus said to the crowd: You went out like a robber with swords and poles to catch me. I sat and taught in the temple every day, and you didn’t take hold of me. But all of this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him and fled. But a young man followed him, who was clothed in a linen robe on his bare skin; and they reached for him. But he let the robe go and fled naked.

Jesus before the High Council / The Denial of Peter

The crowd and their leader, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him, and led him first to Hannas; he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. But it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it would be good for „one“ man to die for the whole people. Simon Peter followed Jesus and another disciple. This disciple was known to the high priest and went with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
Peter was standing outside the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came out and spoke to the gatekeeper and led Peter inside. Then the maid, the gatekeeper, said to Peter: Are you not one of this man’s disciples too? He said: It’s not me. But the servants and servants stood and made a coal fire because it was cold and they warmed themselves. But Peter also stood by them and warmed himself.
The high priest now asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. Jesus answered him: I spoke freely and openly to all the world. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all Jews come together, and have spoken nothing in secret. What are you asking me Ask those who heard what I said to them. See, they know what I said.
When he spoke like this, one of the servants who stood by slapped Jesus in the face and said, Shall thou answer the high priest?
Jesus answered: If I have spoken badly, prove that it is evil; but I was talking right, what are you hitting me for?
And Hannas sent him bound to the high priest Caiaphas. Simon Peter stood there and warmed himself. Then they said to him: Aren’t you one of his disciples? He denied and said: It’s not me. When one of the high priest’s servants, a relative of whom Peter had cut off his ear, said, Didn’t I see you in the garden with him? Then Peter denied again, and immediately the cock crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as he had said to him: Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times. And Peter went out and wept bitterly.
But the chief priests and the whole high council sought false testimony against Jesus that they killed him. And although many false witnesses come forward, they found nothing. Finally two came up and said: He said: I can break off the temple of God and build it in three days. The high priest stood up and said to him, „Are you not answering what these testify against you?“
But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, I swear to you by the living God that you tell us whether you are the Christ.

Jesus said to him: You say it. But I tell you: from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven.
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said: He blasphemed God! What do we need more witnesses for? See, now you have heard blasphemy. What is your judgment They answered and said: He is guilty of death.
Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists. But some of them struck him in the face and said, „Tell us, Christ, who is it that struck you?“

Jesus before Pilate.

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium; it was early in the morning. And they did not go in so that they would not become unclean, but could eat the Passover meal. Then Pilate came out to them and asked: What kind of complaint do you bring against this person?
They answered and said to him, „If this were not a malefactor, we would not have handed him over to you.“
Then Pilate said to them, So take him and judge him according to your law. Then the Jews said to him: We must not kill anyone. This was to fulfill the word of Jesus that he had said to indicate what death he would die. And you began to sue him, saying, We have found that he incites and forbids our people to give taxes to the emperor, and says that he is Christ, a king. And when he was sued by the high priests and elders, he didn’t answer anything.
Pilate said to him, „ Can’t you hear how hard they sue you? And he did not answer a single word, so the governor was amazed. But Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him and said, Are you the king of the Jews? Jesus answered: Are you saying this yourself or have others told you about me? Pilate replied: Am I a Jew? Your people and the high priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?
Jesus replied: My kingdom is out of this world. If my empire were of this world, my servants would fight not to be handed over to the Jews; but now my kingdom is out of this world.
Then Pilate asked him: So are you still a king? Jesus answered: You say it, I am a king. I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. Whoever is from the truth hears my voice. Pilate says to him: What is truth? And when he had said that, he went out to the Jews again and said to them: I find no fault in him. But they became impetuous and said: He is stirring the people up by teaching here and there throughout Judea, from Galilee to here.

Jesus before Herod

But when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the person was from Galilee. And when he heard that he was a subject of Herod, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem these days. But when Herod saw Jesus, he was very happy; because he would have loved to see him long ago; for he had heard of him and hoped he would see a sign from him. And he asked him a lot. But he didn’t answer him.
The chief priests and scribes stood by and severely sued him. But Herod and his soldiers despised and ridiculed him, put on a white robe and sent him back to Pilate.
That day Herod and Pilate became friends; because before that they were enemies of each other.

Jesus condemnation and mockery

At the festival, however, the governor was in the habit of releasing a prisoner to the people whom they wanted. 16 But at that time they had a notorious prisoner, his name was Jesus Barabbas, who was caught with the rebels who had committed murder during the uprising.
And when he was sitting on the judge’s chair, his wife sent him to him and said, „You have nothing to do with this just man; because I suffered a lot today in my dream for his sake.
And the people went up and asked that he do as he used to do. And when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, Which one do you want? Who should I release to you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus, who is said to be the Christ? For he knew that they had delivered him out of jealousy, and said to them: You brought this man to me as one who stirred up the people; and behold, I have interrogated him before you and have found no guilt in this man for whom you accuse him; Not even Herod, because he sent it back to us. And behold, he did nothing that deserves death. That’s why I want to let him hit and let go.
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the people to ask for Barabbas, but to kill Jesus. Then they all shouted together: Go away with this, give us Barabbas! Pilate said to them, What should I do with Jesus, who is said to be the Christ? They all said: let him be crucified! But he said: What did he do evil? But they shouted even more: let him be crucified! And they screamed at him and demanded that he be crucified. And their shouting took over.
But when Pilate saw that he was not doing anything but that the crowd was getting bigger, he took water and washed his hands in front of the people and said: I am innocent of his blood; you watch! Then the whole people answered and said: His blood come on us and our children! Then he released Barabbas, but he had Jesus scourged and delivered him up to be crucified.
The soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole department around him. And undressed him and put on a purple coat and braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head and gave him a tube in his right hand and bent his knees in front of him and mocked him and said: Greetings to you, the King of Jews! and spat on him and took the pipe and struck his head with it.
Then Pilate went out again and said to them: See, I lead him out to you so that you can see that I am not to blame for him. And Jesus came out and wore the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, See what a man!
When the chief priests and the servants saw him, they cried: Crucifixion! Crucified! Pilate said to them, Take him and crucify him, because I find no fault in him.
The Jews replied to him: We have a law and according to the law he has to die because he has made himself God’s son.
When Pilate heard this word, he was even more afraid and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus: Where are you from? But Jesus didn’t answer him.
Then Pilate said to him, Aren’t you talking to me? Don’t you know that I have power to release you and power to crucify you?
Jesus replied: You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore: who handed me over to you has greater sin.
From then on, Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews shouted: If you release him, you are not the friend of the emperor; for whoever makes himself king is against the emperor. When Pilate heard these words, he led Jesus out and sat on the judge’s chair in the place called stone pavement, Gabbata in Hebrew.
But it was around 6 a.m. on the day of the Passover festival. And he said to the Jews: See, this is your king! But they shouted: Away, away with that! Crucify him! Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests replied: We have no king but the emperor. Then he handed Jesus over to them to be crucified.

The end of Judas

When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that he was sentenced to death, he regretted it, and he brought the thirty pieces of silver back to the chief priests and elders and said: I was wrong to betray innocent blood. But they said: What does this concern us? You are watching!
And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple, went away and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said: It is not right that we put them in the box of God; because it’s blood money. However, they decided to buy the pottery field for the funeral for strangers. Therefore, this field is called blood field to this day.
Then what was said was fulfilled by the prophet Jeremiah, who said: „They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price for the sold, which was valued by the Israelites, and they gave the money for the potter’s field, as he did to me Lord commanded „(Jeremiah 32: 9; Zechariah 11: 12-13).

Jesus crucifixion and death

And when they had mocked him, they took off his coat and put on his clothes and led him away to crucify him. and he carried his cross and went out to the place called Skull Place, in Hebrew Golgotha. And when they went out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon; they forced him to carry his cross. A large crowd followed him and women complained and wept.
But Jesus turned to them and said: You daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourself and your children. Because behold, the time will come when one will say: Blessed are the sterile and the bodies that have not given birth, and the breasts that have not fed! Then they will start to say to the mountains: fall over us! And to the hills: cover us! Because if you do that on the green wood, what will become dry?
And when they came to the site by the name of Golgotha, which means: skull site, they gave him wine to drink mixed with bile; and when he tasted it, he didn’t want to drink. But others were brought up, two evildoers, that they would be executed with him. And when they came to the site called the skull site, they crucified him there and the evildoers with him, one on the right and one on the left.
And it was the third hour when they crucified him. Pilate wrote an inscription and put it on the cross; and it was written: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Many Jews read this inscription because the place where Jesus was crucified was close to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Do not write: The king of the Jews, but that he said: I am the king of the Jews. Pilate replied: What I wrote, I wrote. And they sat and guarded him.
And the soldiers who crucified Jesus took his clothes and made four parts, one part for each soldier, and the robe. But that was not sewn, woven in one piece from above. Then they said to each other: let’s not split it up, but let’s find out who it should belong to. This is how the scripture should be fulfilled, which says (Psalm 22:19): „They divided my clothes among themselves and cast lots over my robe.“ The soldiers did so.
But those who passed by blasphemed him and shook their heads and said: If you break off the temple and build it up in three days, help yourself if you are the Son of God and descend from the cross so that we can see and believe. And those crucified with him also insulted him. Likewise, the chief priests mocked the scribes and elders and said: He has helped others and cannot help himself. If he is the Christ, the King of Israel, he now descends from the cross. Then we want to believe in him. He trusted God; now redeem him if he pleases him; because he said: I am the Son of God.
But one of the evildoers who hung on the cross blasphemed him and said: Aren’t you the Christ? Help yourself and us! Then the other rebuked him and said: And you are not afraid of God, who you are in the same damnation after all? We are rightly so, because we receive what our deeds deserve; but the latter has done nothing wrong. And he said: Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom! And Jesus said to him, Truly, I say to you: Today you will be with me in paradise.
But at the cross of Jesus stood his mother and sister, Maria, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and with her the disciple whom he loved, he said to his mother: Woman, behold, this is your son! Then he said to the disciple: See, this is your mother! And from then on the disciple took them in.
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out: Eli, Eli, lama asabtani? That means: My God, my God, why did you leave me? But some who stood there when they heard this said, He is calling for Elijah. And immediately one of them ran, took a sponge and filled it with vinegar and put it on a pipe and gave it to drink. But the others said: Stop, let see whether Elijah comes and help him!
And Jesus cried out: Father, I command my spirit into your hands! And when he said that, he died.
And when all the people who were there, watching, saw what was happening, they slapped their chests and turned back. But all his acquaintances stood far away, even the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw all of this.
And it was already about the sixth hour, and there was darkness all over the country until the ninth hour, and the sun lost its light, and the curtain in the temple tore in two from top to bottom. And the earth shook and the rocks tore open, and the tombs opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep rose and went out of the tombs after his resurrection and came to the holy city and appeared to many.
But when the captain and those who guarded Jesus saw the earthquake and what happened there, they were very frightened and said: Verily, this was the Son of God!
And there were many women watching from afar; they had followed Jesus from Galilee and had served him; among them were Mary of Magdala and Mary, the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. But because it was a day of preparation and the bodies should not remain on the cross over the Sabbath – because this Sabbath was a high festival day – the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and that they would be removed. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and also the other who was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he had already died, they did not break his legs; but one of the soldiers thrust his spear into his side, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who saw that, he testified, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you too can believe.
Because that was so that the Scripture would be fulfilled (Exodus 12:46): „You shall not break his leg.“ And again the Scripture says in another place (Zechariah 12:10): „You will see that that they pierced. ”

Jesus burial

And when it was already evening and because it was armament day, that is the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected councilor who also waited for the kingdom of God, came and went inside to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus . Pilate was surprised that he was already dead and called the captain and asked him if he had died long ago. And when he had discovered it from the captain, he gave Josef the body. And Joseph took his body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. Nicodemus, who had come to Jesus earlier that night, also came and brought myrrh mixed with aloe, about a hundred pounds. So they took the body of Jesus and tied it in linen with fragrant oils, as the Jews used to bury. But there was a garden at the place where he was crucified and a new grave in the garden in which no one had ever been placed. They put Jesus there because of the Jews‘ arming day because the grave was near.
But the women who came with him from Galilee followed, and looked at the grave and how his body was put inside. But they turned back and prepared fragrant oils and ointments. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the law.

Guarding the tomb

The next day after the arming day, the high priests came to Pilate with the Pharisees and said, Lord, we remembered that this seducer spoke when he was still alive: I will rise again after three days. Therefore order that the grave be guarded until the third day so that his disciples do not come and steal him and say to the people: he has risen from the dead and the last deception is worse than the first. Pilate said to them, There you have the watch; go and guard it as best you can. They went and secured the grave with the guard and sealed the stone.

Jesus‘ resurrection

And behold, a great earthquake happened. For the angel of the Lord came down from heaven, came in and rolled away the stone and sat on it. His figure was like lightning and his robe was white like snow. The guards were frightened of him and became as if they were dead.
And when the Sabbath had passed, Mary of Magdala and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome bought fragrant oils to go and anoint him. And they came to the grave on the first day of the week, very early when the sun rose. And they said among themselves: Who is rolling the stone from the door of the grave for us? And they looked and saw that the stone had rolled away; because it was very big. And they went into the tomb and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus, but saw a young man sitting on his right hand, who was wearing a long white robe, and they were horrified.
But he said to them: Do not be horrified! You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified one. He has risen, he is not here. Behold the place where they put him down. He is not here; he has risen, as he said. Come and see the place where he was lying;
And they remembered his words. And when they were concerned about it, behold, two men with shiny dresses came up to them. But they were startled and bowed their faces to the earth. Then they said to them, What are you looking for the living among the dead? He is not here, he has risen. Remember what he said to you when he was still in Galilee: go quickly and tell his disciples that he rose from the dead. And behold, he will go before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I told you. The Son of Man must be handed over to the sinners and crucified and resurrected on the third day.
But Maria stood outside the grave and wept. When she was crying, she looked into the grave and saw two angels sitting in white robes, one at the head and the other at the feet where they had put the body of Jesus. And they said to her: Woman, what are you crying for? She said to them: You took my master away and I don’t know where you put him.
And when she said that, she turned and saw Jesus standing there, not knowing that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her: Woman, what are you crying for? Who are you looking for? She thinks it is the gardener and says to him: Lord, if you carried him away, tell me where you put him; then I want to get him. Jesus said to her: Mary! Then she turned and spoke to him in Hebrew: Rabbuni !, that is: Master! Jesus said to her: Don’t touch me! Because I have not yet gone up to the father. But go to my brothers and tell them: I am going up to my father and to your father, to my God and to your God.
And they hurriedly walked away from the grave with fear and great joy and ran to preach it to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said: Greetings! And they came to him and gripped his feet and fell before him. Then Jesus said to them: Do not be afraid! Go and tell my brothers that they are going to Galilee: there they will see me.

But when they went, behold, some of the guards came into town and told the chief priests everything that had happened. And they got together with the elders, gave advice and gave the soldiers a lot of money, saying, Say, his disciples came in the night and stole him while we were sleeping. And when it comes to the governor’s ears, we want to appease him and make sure you are safe.
They took the money and did as they were instructed. And so it has become talk of the Jews to this day.
But it was Mary of Magdala and Johanna and Maria, the mother of James, and the others with them; they said that to the apostles. And these words seemed to them like chatter and they didn’t believe them.
Then Peter and the other disciple went out and they came to the grave. But the two ran together and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the grave first, looks in and sees the linen towels lying there; but he did not go inside. Then Simon Peter followed him and went into the grave and sees the linen towels lying there, but the sweatband that Jesus had tied around his head was not next to the linen towels, but next to it, wrapped up in a special place. Then the other disciple, who had come to the tomb first, went in and saw and believed. Because they did not yet understand the Scriptures that he would have to rise from the dead. Then the disciples went home.

The Emmaus disciples

And behold, two of them went to a village on the same day, that was about two hours away from Jerusalem; whose name is Emmaus. And they talked to each other about all these stories. And it was when they talked and talked to each other that Jesus approached himself and went with them. But their eyes were held so that they didn’t recognize him.
But he said to them: What are these things that you negotiate on the way? Then they stopped sad.
And the one named Cleopas answered and said to him, „Are you the only one among the strangers in Jerusalem who doesn’t know what happened there in those days?“
And he said to them, What then?
And they said to him: That with Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, powerful in actions and words before God and all people; how our high priests and superiors handed him over to the death penalty and crucified him. But we hoped it would be him who would redeem Israel. And above all of that, today is the third day that this has happened. We were also frightened by some women from our midst who were at the grave early, did not find his body, come and say they saw an apparition from angels who said he was alive. And some of us went to the grave and found it as the women said; but they didn’t see him.
And he said to them: O fools, with a slow heart, to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t Christ have to suffer this and enter His glory?
And he started with Moses and all the prophets and explained to them what was said about him in all the Scriptures. And they came close to the village where they were going. And he pretended to go on. And they compiled him and said: stay with us; because it wants to be evening and the day has slanted. And he went in to stay with them.
And when he was sitting at the table with them, he took the bread, thanked him, broke it and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. And he disappeared from them. And they said to each other: Didn’t our hearts burn in us when he talked to us on the way and the scripture opened to us?
And they got up at the same hour, returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven who were with them; who said: The Lord has truly risen and appeared to Simon. And they told them what had happened on the way and how he recognized them when he broke the bread.

Jesus‘ appearance before the disciples

But when they talked about it, he himself, Jesus, stepped among them and said to them: Peace be to you!
But they were startled and afraid and thought they saw a ghost.
And he said to them, What are you so terrified of, and why do such thoughts come to your heart? See my hands and feet, it’s me myself. Touch me and see; because a spirit has no flesh and bones, as you can see, that I have it.
And when he said that, he showed them hands and feet. But when they still did not believe in joy and wondered, he said to them: Do you have something to eat here?
And they presented him with a piece of fried fish. And he took it and ate before them.
But he said to them: These are my words that I said to you when I was still with you: Everything that is written by me must be fulfilled in the law of Moses, in the prophets and in the psalms.
Then he opened their understanding to them so that they understood the Scripture, and said to them: It is written that Christ will suffer and will rise from the dead on the third day; and that in his name there will be preached repentance for the forgiveness of sins among all peoples. Start in Jerusalem and be a witness to it. And behold, I want to send down on you what my father promised. But you should stay in the city until you are equipped with strength from above.

Thomas

But Thomas, who is called the twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. Then the other disciples said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: If I do not see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger in the nail marks and put my hand in his side, I cannot believe it.
And after eight days, his disciples were gathered inside again and Thomas was with them. When the doors were closed, come to Jesus and step among them and say: Peace be with you!
Then he said to Thomas: Pass your finger over and see my hands, and pass your hand over and put it in my side, and do not believe, but believe!
Thomas answered and said to him: My Lord and my God!
Jesus said to him: Because you saw me, Thomas, that’s why you believe. Blessed are those who don’t see and yet believe!
Jesus did many other signs before his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written so that you can believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that you can have life in his name by faith.

Jesus‘ Ascension

But he led her out to Betania and raised his hands and blessed them. And when he blessed them, he departed from them and went up to heaven. But they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy and were always in the temple and praised God.

The apostle Paul testifies (1 Corinthians 15: 3-8):
3 … that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
