Every life is unique. Also, the history of God with the people is unmistakable and very personal. You may wonder how such a personal relationship with God can look like. We would like to try to explain that to you.

God is the creator of this world. Every human being is his creature. You too! We humans are made to live in relationship with God. That is the deep meaning of our life.

But because God has not created puppets, no one is forced on any person’s relationship with God. The Bible tells us that man has decided against God. He has said goodbye to God and therefore God’s standards and plans for his life. The Bible calls that sin. The word “sin” describes a deep abyss, a gap that has opened between God and man. All that we call sins is nothing but the effects of a life without God.

The deep gulf of sin separates us from God. God and sin, that does not fit together. There is no way back for us on our own. We can not overcome the gap. Not even when we try to lead a decent life, are always nice and helpful? The Bible says no! No matter how hard we try, how many good deeds we collect in our account, we are and remain sinners, separate from God. Sin builds the way back to God. A sobering realization.

What we can not do on our own, God has long done for us. He has built a bridge to bridge the gap between us and him. This bridge is called Jesus Christ. He is not just a historical figure. He is the Son of God who came into the world to redeem us the way back to God. He died on the cross. But that was not an accident in world history. There is much more behind it. Jesus has taken on the evil consequences of sin. The worst consequence of sin was and is death. Jesus was the first to conquer death. He is risen from the dead. He opened the door to eternal life in communion with God. He who entrusts himself to Jesus bears the consequences of sin for him and gives him a life that does not end with death.

This life in communion with God can begin right now. Jesus introduced us to God as a Father eagerly waiting for His child to come home. He loves you above all else. He wants to go through life with you, through all the ups and downs, and he wants to comfort you when you are sad and disappointed. Not only that, but he wants to give you new strength and courage when you are finished. Jesus once said, “Come to me, all you who are laborious and burdened, and I will give you rest for your souls.” They can talk to God, he listens to them. In the Bible, you can read how God imagines your life. A personal relationship with God – that’s not difficult.

If you want to trust God, you can do it anytime. You can do it now. He is only a prayer far away. Praying is nothing more than a conversation with God. It does not take big words. Tell God what’s on your mind. Come to him as you are. He understands you. He listens to you. Maybe you are still unsure. So here’s a suggestion for such a prayer:

God, I thank you for your love. I trust that you are close to me and understand me.

You know my life – the past, the stubborn and my future.
I wish that you are with me and always stay with me.
Jesus, thank you for having died on the cross for me too.
I ask forgiveness for everything that separates me from you.
I want to be sure that you have taken on my sin,
and thank you for paying for it with your life for me.
You have built me a bridge to God and given me eternal life.
I accept this gift and ask you: Come into my life. I want to confide in you and I do not want to live without you anymore.
You said that you do not reject anyone who is looking for you.
That’s why I ask you to hear my prayer and accept me.
Amen.

Once we understand the high price Jesus paid, the love that drove him to become his children, our lives will never be the same again. Even as a new believer, you will continue to be tempted to take your own life into your own hands, to go your own way and to deal with doubts and failures. He will never give you up, and if you include him in your life, you will experience his faithfulness and the power to live for him.

The opponent of God, Satan, is at the latest from now on the plan and will try again and again to obscure the view of Jesus and to separate you from him. Therefore, you need other Christians that you know follow Jesus too. So look around for a church where such people are at home. There will always be doubts whether everything is really true about Jesus. Even then, you need other Christians or a church where you are at home and can find answers.
Read the Bible regularly and talk to Jesus. You can discuss everything with him. He has promised to hear you – at any time of the day or night. Be sure of what Jesus says (John 6:37): “Whoever comes to me, I will not drive him out.” and John 10, 28:

“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will tear them out of my hand.”

Jesus keeps his promises, and he has the power to do so: Matthew 28, 18:

“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

In Revelation 3:20, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will go in and have the sacrament with him and he with me. “He is already waiting and doing nothing better than to fulfill this request – if it is meant seriously.
